The Leaning Tower of Pisa was designed as a free-standing bell tower for the cathedral in Pisa. However upon completion of the first three floors, the tower started to incline. Only 54 m of the originally planned 100 m height could be achieved and even the ringing of the bells was forbidden because of the danger of collapsing. But the tower continued to incline. Between 1990 and 2001, no more visitors were allowed to climb the tower. Thanks to extensive rescue attemps, the tower could be stabilised and is accessible again. it now has an inclination 4,50 m .
